Hello, Jello!
It was totally, totally fun. It wiggled, it jiggled, it shone in the sun.
FUN!

However...
Eat it?
This stuff is edible??
She was never convinced of that...

Lessons in Musicianship
When Rebekah practices her flute, the children stop what they're doing and gather round. On this day, Rebekah held a long tone and let the kids play with the keys. They produced mostly two-note warbles, so not too unmelodious, and as you can see, they found it by turns solemnly fascinating and positively gleeful.
Though everyone had a turn (or at least the opportunity), it was Willa who was most determined to get AT that thing!

Water Baby, Willa
Like Dominic, Willa started out a little uncertain. I actually held her feet in the water for the first 10 seconds, while she let me know she was NOT IMPRESSED. After ten seconds, of course, it didn't feel so cold, and she was content to stay in the water.
So long as she could be very, very close to me...
And then something interesting floated by...
And there we, of course, all those OTHER children cavorting in the water. Maybe this place does have potential, after all.

In the end, Willa LOVED the pool. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

Water Baby, Dominic

But after he'd seen the other kids cavorting in there, he was willing to give it a try. On his own, thank you so much...
And in very short order, he was a total pool pro...

Cool-seeking 2
Once again we leave the house in search of air conditioning. This day's expedition (which occured on Wednesday, I think) was supposed to be to Dairy Queen, but when we arrived at quarter to ten we discovered that it doesn't open until eleven. You'd think that after fifteen years in the neighbourhood, I'd know that. Hm. But that's okay, because Tim Horton's is right across the street!
I rarely give the children cookies and other nutritionally dubious sweet treats. Even when we bake, we're most often producing banana bread, muffins, and the like. But a trip to Tim Horton requires Timbits.
Willa appreciates the spherical beauty of a jam-filled, sugar-coated sweetie. And really, that's about all she did with it. She also appreciated the way it tore into bits, and the lovely feel of the jam as it smeared around the tray, but the flavour? I don't think she got that far...
And Dominic? While I think he did actually ingest some, what he appreciated most about his Timbit (old fashioned, no glaze) was its sculptural possibilities.

Look! Impale it with your finger, and you have ... an umbrella? a flag? a roof? Whatever it is, it pleases the boy!

Ah, Starbucks. I may find your coffee far too bitter and your blender drinks revoltingly sweet...
but this week? I can forgive you all that for your air conditioning!
Look at Adam and Eliana. I think the walk in the heat, as my gran would have put it, "took all the stuffing right out of them". Poor mites. They did perk up in a few minutes. :)

Science Lesson
They all look very, very serious in this picture. That is because they are all thinking. Thinking about Scientific Things.
Specifically, evaporation. They should all know that word now. With a little repetition, it will be a permanent new addition to their vocabularies!
We'd been talking about why it's particularly important to drink water when it's hot outside. How our bodies cool themselves by sweating, and how we need to drink water, not just to cool our insides (Eliana's suggestion), but so our body can make sweat out of it.
That sweat doesn't make you hot(Adam's thought), but that it's actually cooling you down!
And that whole idea called for a hands-on demonstration of the cooling effects of evaporation. (My definition: "when the air sucks up the water". You may have a better one...) We evaporated water off our arms many, many times this morning. Many, many, many times, and, despite the sober faces in this particular picture, it was a gleeful and fascinating experience. All 264,538 times. (Except this one. Go figure.)

Evaporation. More important than you thought!

Anything is good...
...when you can dip it in ketchup!

I'm not sure if it's the black bean felafels they enjoy so much, or the process of dipping.

I suspect the latter...
