Melanie asked for more info, so I just thought I'd give you the recipe. During the presidential primaries, each candidate provided a 'favourite family recipe' for... I dunno, some talk-show host, perhaps? I forget what McCain's recipe was because it didn't interest me much. (Ribs, perhaps?) Obama's sounded interesting, so I tried it out, and we love it. I found this version on A Year of Slow-Cooking.
Our family now calls it "Presidential Chili". Hee.
Here's the recipe:
500 g ground turkey
6 tomatoes (I usually use plum)
6 cloves garlic, chopped coarsely
1 large onion, sliced
1 green pepper, chopped
1 can kidney beans (goop and all; don't rinse)
1 teaspoon each: cumin, oregano, basil, turmeric, salt
1 tablespoon chili powder
5 tablespoons red wine vinegar
Use a 6-litre slow cooker. (6-quart, if you have an old one.)
Brown the meat in a frying pan and drain any fat. Place in the slow cooker. Dump in everything else --slow cookery is so easy! -- stir once or twice, and cook on low for 7 - 9 hours, or high for 4 - 5.
Apparently the Obamas eat it over rice. My family eats it with baking-powder biscuits. Nom.
Yum! Sounds great. I think it will be on our home menu sometime soon. Thanks for the recipe.
