Request for Craft Supplies

Hello! I have in mind to make leaf books with the children, and to that end I need light cardboard -- the kind they use for cereal boxes. I need four or five pages per child (and maybe an extra for myself), and I think I could get two or so pages per cereal box.

Donations VERY welcome! They don't have to be cereal boxes, of course, just something of that weight.

Thank you!

Today we went for a walk and collected leaves. We found them in brown, green, yellow, orange, red, and even purple! (Hurrah for smoke trees and their exotic colouring!) They are currently being pressed on my dining table, beneath a thoroughly impressive roster of heavy books. Physically heavy, that is.

Menu Monday

Monday: hot and sour soup (a milder, vegetarian version with tofu, beefed up a bit with vermicelli and a few extra vegetables)

Tuesday: tabouli, lentil stew

Wednesday: Aloo gobi (mixed vegetables, including roast cauliflower, in a mild curry sauce)

Thursday: Lentil beet salad, stuffed green peppers

Friday: Swedish meatballs on egg noodles

Obama Chili

Melanie asked for more info, so I just thought I'd give you the recipe. During the presidential primaries, each candidate provided a 'favourite family recipe' for... I dunno, some talk-show host, perhaps? I forget what McCain's recipe was because it didn't interest me much. (Ribs, perhaps?) Obama's sounded interesting, so I tried it out, and we love it. I found this version on A Year of Slow-Cooking.

Our family now calls it "Presidential Chili". Hee.

Here's the recipe:

500 g ground turkey
6 tomatoes (I usually use plum)
6 cloves garlic, chopped coarsely
1 large onion, sliced
1 green pepper, chopped
1 can kidney beans (goop and all; don't rinse)
1 teaspoon each: cumin, oregano, basil, turmeric, salt
1 tablespoon chili powder
5 tablespoons red wine vinegar

Use a 6-litre slow cooker. (6-quart, if you have an old one.)

Brown the meat in a frying pan and drain any fat. Place in the slow cooker. Dump in everything else --slow cookery is so easy! -- stir once or twice, and cook on low for 7 - 9 hours, or high for 4 - 5.

Apparently the Obamas eat it over rice. My family eats it with baking-powder biscuits. Nom.

Spiced Lentils

We had these with rice yesterday. Though Milan was non-committal, the others looooooved it, three helpings apiece.

Ingredients:

olive oil
2 red onions, finely sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced

1/2 t turmeric
1/2 t cumin
1/2 t coriander
1 6-inch cinnamon stick
2 star anise
5 green cardamom pods, gently crushed (I only have dried, so that's what I used!)
an inch of fresh ginger, scrubbed and sliced thin (you don't need to peel)

1 cup lentils
scant 3 cups vegetable stock or water (I used water; I think the resultant food is sweeter thereby, without the salt of the stock in it)

Method:

Sautee onions, garlic, jalapeno, and spices, stirring frequently, until soft, 3 - 5 minutes.

Add lentils, stir.

Add stock/water and salt/pepper to taste. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer 20 minutes, until liquid is absorbed and lentils are tender. (Now, I found there was a fair bit of liquid left over. Perhaps my lentils didn't need so much water, but also, the onions put off liquid as they cook. Doesn't matter: it tasted fine!)

My recipe calls for garnishing the lentils with some fresh red onion and a broiled circle of chevre (which is what my family did, YUM!), but your children ate it -- with gusto! -- served with about an equal portion of white rice.

Enjoy!

Museum of Nature

There are bugs in there. They look like sticks, but they move!

Dominic responds as is customary -- the point!!
Willa was so excited, she's basically a blur...

(All appearances to the contrary, the babies DID get out of their stroller. Next time, I'll remember to take pictures...)
Watch out for that polar bear, little seal!
